The 2010 Christmas Letter - Gibson Family

Dear Family and Friends,

We have been incredibly busy this year and life is moving a little too fast.

The year started off with a Whale Watch for Alexander’s 7th birthday. The whales were hiding, but the dolphins played in the wake of the boat for about 30 minutes, giving us a fabulous show. Playtime is the best part of the day, especially if it involves Lego. Alex is in first grade and loves life, loves playing with his friends, and building things.

Fiona turned 4 and continues to blossom taking piano, art, and immersing herself in playtime. She loves reading and is holding her own with her big brothers. She is constantly curious and asks how to spell and write words daily. She has impressed, scared and amazed us this year… giving herself a haircut, slicing her foot at Easter time resulting in 7 stitches, and reading “Dick & Jane” books by herself.

David turned 8 and is now in 3rd grade. He’s reading the Harry Potter series and cherishes his reading time. He is animated, and loves to pretend play and create his own stories. Both boys are “mad scientist, inventor, explorers” and are curious about tools, space, cars, explosions, and of course, gross stuff. Did I mention Wii or Lego??? Both boys are getting tall. In fact, David just cried this last weekend when he found he was TOO TALL to ride a pump-train ride with Fiona at Knott’s Berry Farm. 

Josie, a Russian Blue / Gray kitty decided to adopt us in the spring. She is a “teenage” cat with a limp… and is just a bundle of love. Caramel has realized that Josie is here to stay and has made it clear that she’s the boss… She is often found bundled up on the top bunk, amongst the stuffed animals.

John has travelled for much of the year. Mostly in North Carolina, but a few trips to Winnipeg, Canada , Oklahoma, and Texas thrown in there. Time at home was spent putting finishing touches in the MANCAVE (aka) the garage & studio… and has done a mighty fine job with it. No major problems were reported until the VERY LAST nail was being struck into the fascia board around the window. Mr. “I NEVER GET HURT” learned the hard way just how much gravity it takes to bring a hammer that was left at the top of a ladder down onto his head. On a quiet Sunday morning was disrupted by a manly scream, to find John grabbing his head… 7 staples later we hope he has learned.

Suzanne continues to occupy her free time by organizing fund-raising events for school (Casino Night), and the Madrona Marsh. The remaining hours were occupied with planning the class of 1990 20-year high school reunion in July. Teaching art classes at the boys school, with CoachART at children’s hospital, in addition to independent students, has filled Suzanne’s calendar. The Summer Art Studio has really taken shape, getting more students throughout the summer. One of the moms and the pre-school managed to secure 2 full class of 6 & 8 year olds for group lessons… 12 new students.

Despite John’s busy travel schedule, we assured that we would get some un-interrupted daddy time for the kids. At the end of the summer we escaped to the Angeles National Forest for a bit of camping, and then Daddy headed back home with the kids while mommy enjoyed a well needed personal art retreat at Camp Teresita Pines in Wrightwood (Suzy’s childhood girls camp). At the end of the week, John and the kids came back to enjoy a full family weekend of activities. Move over Robin Hood, David is a pretty good shot with the Archery!

Much thanks and love and appreciation to Suzanne’s mum and dad for all their hours of babysitting, driving, and carpooling with the kids while John has been travelling. Many things have been accomplished with their help and support.

2011 is already shaping up to be a busy year. A remodel of the main house is now moving from the planning phase into the permit and build phase, so watch for a running blog of our building adventure. More art and activities for Suzanne’s Studio, as well as family excursions are planned too.

We would love to hear from you… know what you are doing… know that you are healthy, happy and enjoying life… so please keep in touch with us. For more fun anecdotes and pictures of the family and other fun stories, please visit our family blog: http://DAFFYGIBSON.blogspot.com/
